Book talk: Richard Varick, A Forgotten Founding Father, by Dr. Paul Cushman.

Richard Varick (1753-1831) was trained as a lawyer and served as an officer in the Continental Army during the Revolution. He saw service at Saratoga as an aide to Gen. Philip Schuyler, served briefly as an aide to Benedict Arnold, and was involved in planning the departure of the British from New York City. After the war, Varick practiced law, married well (to Maria Roosevelt, a daughter of Isaac Roosevelt), and made his fortune in real estate. He served as mayor of New York City, and later in life was active in a number of philanthropic endeavors. Varick Street is named for him.
