The NYG&B Society Book Award
The NYG&B Society Book Award was
instituted in 1992 to honor original compiled genealogies, family histories,
or multi-family works, published in book form and for sale to the public.
To be eligible for the award a book should have a significant connection
to New York, demonstrate superior use of genealogical methods and sources,
and be well presented and be indexed. The author must be a member of
the Society and preference is given to authors without extensive prior
publications.
The Education and Publication Committee will consider books for the
award from among the Library's holdings. Books should not be submitted
to the Committee directly. To be considered for the award, a book must
bear a publication date no more than five years earlier than the year
of the award. No more than two awards will be given each year, but
there is no requirement that any award be given in a year. The award
will be in the form of a certificate or other appropriate means of
recognition, which will be presented at a Society function.
The Education and Publication Committee will submit its recommendations
to the Board of Trustees for final approval.
The Burling Books Receives NYG&B Book Award
At its December
11, 2001 meeting the Board of Trustees ratified the recommendation of
the Education and Publication Committee to present the Society's Book
Award to Jane Thompson-Stahr, of Scituate, Massachusetts, for her two-volume
genealogy The Burling Books, published in 2001.
The Burling
Books, reviewed by Henry B. Hoff in the January 2002 issue of the
Record, begins with new information on the English origins of the family.
Edward and Grace (Norrington) Burling were Quakers in England before
about 1680 when they joined the Quaker community in New York. The compiler
traces thousands of their descendants, who spread out from Long Island,
New York City, and Westchester County to many parts of the country and
the world, and led some highly interesting lives which are described
in detail. They intermarried with numerous other New York families.
This is only
the fourth time that the Book Award has been presented. Previous recipients
were Johannes Dyckman of Fort Orange and His Descendants, by
Marjorie Dikeman Chamberlain (1992); The Dockstader Family (four
volumes), by Doris Dockstader Rooney (1994); and The Settlers of
the Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, New York, the ongoing multi-volume
work by Frank J. Doherty (1998). Jane Thompson-Stahr's The Burling
Books is a most worthy addition to this list.
Previous
Awards Given
The first
NYG&B Society Book Award was given in 1992 to Marjorie Dikeman Chamberlain
of East Poland, Maine, for her Johannes Dyckman of Fort Orange and
His Descendants, Volume I (The First Five Generations), published
in 1988. Mrs. Chamberlain was one of the founders of the Dyckman/Dikeman/Dykeman
Family Association, which supported the publication of her book.
The second
NYG&B Society Book Award was given in 1994 for The Dockstader Family,
by Doris Dockstader Rooney of Dodge City, Kansas. Mrs. Rooney's
work, filling four large volumes (published 1983-1994), traces the descendants
of Georg Dachstätter, one of the Palatines who came to New York
in 1709.
The third
NYG&B Society Book Award was presented in 1998 to Frank J. Doherty,
of Pleasant Valley, New York, for his multi-volume work, The
Settlers of the Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, New York: A Genealogical
and Historical Study.
