(page 708) Major Land Transactions: Pre-Emption Line, 1786. Established by the Treaty of Hartford, it ran due north to Lake Ontario from the 82nd milestone on the New York-Pennsylvania boundary line. The Pre-Emption Line was re-surveyed in 1792 and has been the subject of boundary disputes as recently as the 1960s.

The book includes pre-1880 vital data for Wayne and neighboring counties (especially Monroe and Ontario).  It includes biographical data for several dozen faculty ("Personal Sketches", pp. 44–65) and hundreds of students ("Personal Notes", pp. 150–193). The personal notes were supplied by the students themselves and typically include father's name, date & place of birth, spouse's name, date of marriage, occupation, and current (early 1890s) residence. Together they form an annotated bibliography of the books, pamphlets, and periodical articles on the history of a region covering ten New York counties: Allegany, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates.
