Hiring Professional Genealogical Researchers

There are many good reasons to seek professional assistance in a family history research project. The NYG&B maintains a list of professional genealogists who have agreed to have their names, credentials, areas of specialty, and contact information listed here.

Working with a Professional

After contacting a researcher, we recommend that you and the professional have a clear understanding, in writing, of what work will be undertaken, how it will be scheduled, whether there is an hourly or an all-inclusive charge for services, who is responsible for travel, photocopy, telephone calls, etc., the total estimated cost of each stage of the undertaking, and at what intervals the researcher will report to and bill you.

Please note that included on the list are persons or organizations who are advertisers in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record or The New York Researcher. While we would not intentionally include anyone on the list who we know to be unqualified, hiring a consultant entails some risk connected to challenges of your research and the capabilities of the individual you hire. The NYG&B cannot guarantee the quality or timeliness of the work you will receive.
