The Brooklyn Historical Society presents historians Carla Peterson and Prithi Kanakamedala as they examine the efforts of NY’s black elite to build institutions and equal status during the post- Civil War era.
In 2011, Professor Carla Peterson published a landmark book: Black Gotham - A Family History of African Americans in Nineteenth-Century New York (Yale University Press). An article about the book and Professor Peterson's research was published in the summer 2011 New York Researcher. In 2012, she launched a website/blog addressing much of the subject matter covered in the book at www.blackgothamarchive.org , which is a boon to researchers on the subject. You can reserve tickets here or learn more about the event at http://brooklynhistory.org/visitor/calendar.html .
