Title: NORMAN, Sarah (married WOOD)
Description: One of maternal 3rd great grandmothers was a Sarah Norman who was born in Hudson on 20 Feb 1815. While I have no concrete information on who this Sarah Norman's parents were I suspect from headstone information in the Hudson City Cemetery that Sarah Norman's parents may have been a William E Norman (ABT 1778-1828) and a Rachel Norman (Abt 1780-1845). There is also a burial in the Hudson City Cemetery of a Sarah Norman, died 4 Feb 1814 (3 months), who "my" Sarah Norman was perhaps named after. "My" Sarah Norman married Frederick Wood (1815-1877) before 1842 when a first son Augustus Norman Wood was born in Bridgeport, CT (or perhaps NYC?) on 11 Aug 1842. Sarah Norman Wood died in Bridgeport, CT on 25 Feb. 1893. Any information on the family of Sarah Norman would be appreciated.

Title: JEREMIAH JOHNSON
Description: My ggggrandfather Jeremiah Johnson was a smith having his shop later in Market St, New York City and lived later in Cumberland St, Brooklyn. He died with what we believed was a not inconsequential sum of money. Also lived in Essex St and I know that building is still standing. We are at a loss to find his parents - not on his death certificate, not on his Will which we have and cannot find any birth records for children born between 1817 and 1832 in NYC, nor marriage records, nor obits. Any help appreciated. Jeremiah was born in 1795 (no month or day) in apparently Virginia to New York parents and he died on 31 March 1871 in Brooklyn. I travelled to NYC from Australia to secure his Will and other documents relating to his life. More to come I hope.

Title: WOOD - Margaret (Nurse) Sarah J (Nurse)
Description: Sarah J WOOD Born 1884 Sunderland, UK Margaret WOOD Born 1886 Sunderland, UK Following on from a previous query regarding the above ladies' nephew John WOOD I have managed to discover that the above worked in New York as nurses. From what I have found Sarah J Wood worked as a nurse at the residence of Ralph Pulitzer as shown on 1930 census East 32nd Street. She worked for others too and have found two other entries 1920 working as a nurse for Henry C Taylor at what looks like East 69th St. Manhattan Assembly District 15. and also 1915 where she is shown as nurse to family of Edgar C LEVY at Church Lane, Westchester, Scarsdale. Sarah had several trips across the sea which I have records of and I imagine she worked for others who were not recorded on Census. Margaret also made several visits in fact more than Sarah if Ancestry.co,uk records suggest. I can only find one instance on census and that is 1920 and nurse to Nathan Straus and family at MAD 7. I cannot make out the Street (possibly West 72nd) House No 27, Dwelling 72, Visited No 254. It seems like my two relatives worked with fairly respectable families and would be interested to gain any insight as to working conditions etc. These ladies were my great grand aunts. As far as inquiries with my family it appears neither were married and spent their lives nursing. I would be grateful to learn more about these fine ladies and welcome any contact. Best regards - Bryn Jones (Sunderland UK)

Title: Bars/Taverns in Manhattan
Description: It appears that my great-grandfather, John Hagan/O'Hagan, and his first cousin, Dennis Hagan, owned a bar/tavern at separate times (John about 1897 and Dennis about 1889) in Manhattan. I would think there is some sort of tax list or the like that would list the names and owners of such establishments. Anyone know where to look for that list? The city directories of the time only show "liquors" and an address, but not names of the actual establishments, so I only have family lore to suggest that they were bars, not distributors, etc.

Title: Humphrey Hughes related to Blythe?
Description: Looking for info on Humphrey L. Hughes b. 1848 Tremeirchion, Flintshire, Wales d. 1895 and buried in Floyd, NY. He was living with my family Frank & Kittie (Perry) Clough in Frankfort in 1889 (Kittie's first husband was a John Hughes of Ilion no divorce or death record found). Kittie's niece Annabelle Palmer created a memorial book with 3 entries - her father, brother who died at age 16 & Humphrey. Humphrey never married but claimed to be a nephew of millionaire Thomas Blythe of California. The NY Times states that he spent considerable money to secure recognition as an heir to the Blythe estate. The Blythe court records were destroyed in the California earthquake. Humphrey's probate leaves his assets to a male named George Twill (doesn't seem to be related), the obituary does list an unamed sister living in Utica.

Should I try and order the record from the Municipal Archives in NY or do they only have the indexed records? I do not have a date for the marriage but presume it was in 1909. Thanks for any advice.

Title: Feldman 1910 Birth Cert Impossible From NYC Dept of Health
Description: The extra rigid requirements for obtaining Birth Cert copies beginning with 1910 births in Manhattan really has me frustrated. Even though I have the cert number, I can not prove to the Dept of Health that my relative is deceased. Shortly after his birth his mother "changed" his surname (Feldman) to that of her 2nd husband (Niedergerke). All records such as Soc Sec Application and death cert only refer to the new surname. Any ideas you may have to work around this obstacle would be appreciated.

Title: WOOD John Born 1st May 1904 Sunderland UK died 25th January 1927 New York
Description: My late mother's uncle moved to New York in the mid 1920's. We have some details which include a letter immediately prior to his death on 25th January 1927 a couple of days after attending the boxing match of Fidel la Barba and William 'Elky' Clark on 21st January 1927. His letter was sent to his father on 22nd January with his address given as 119, 40 Street, Corona LJ, however his business card showed an address of 412, East 65th Street, New York City with a telephone number of Rhinelander 0300 ext 99. Having just visited New York 16th Sept 2012 I noted the address in E 65th Street appears to have been replaced. I did not visit Corona. I am not sure when John WOOD arrived in New York nor why he emigrated. I would be grateful if anyone could assist to fill in any blanks. He mentions in his letter a couple of Aunts who may have lived in NY although their names are hard to make out. I know there is an anecdotal family tale that there was some concern regarding sending John's body back to the UK by boat after his death. I cannot find any information in the UK although his body was interred near to my home. Thank you in advance - Bryn I look forward to another visit to New York as yet unplanned for 2013.

Catharine WILL, daughter of Henry WILL, married Charles Herman HALSEY, merchant in Baltimore, in the German Reformed Church of New York City 31 October 1798 (The Record 127 [1996]: 159). They had at least the following children: a. Catharina Henriette HALSEY, born in New York, Philadelphia or Baltimore 17 May 1801; b. Anna Maria HALSEY, born in New York, Philadelphia or somewhere in New Jersey 12 November 1805 (baptized Cranbury, New Jersey [First Presbyterian Church] 24 September 1809); and c. Henry Arnold HALSEY, born unknown where 9 March 1809 (baptized Cranbury, New Jersey [First Presbyterian Church] 24 September 1809). Louisa Henriette VAN TUYLL married William SCHENCK/SCHANCK (1815-1868) in Cranbury, New Jersey (First Presbyterian Church) 5 July 1838. They had several children and further descendants. Description: I am seeking assistance tracing the ancestry of Louis Vanderpoel Ebert, my great-grandfather, born in Paris of American parents, and likely raised in New Jersey and New York in the late 1800s. It is possible that his father was Castello (sp?) Ebert. I do not know the name of his mother. We believe Castello's brother was Louis Ebert. who left the United States for Brazil in the latter part of the 19th Century. We would appreciate any leads or assistance in understanding more about our Ebert and Vanderpoel family origins and ancestry. Thank you.

Title: Abig / Blaisuis
Description: This question is about Frederick (Fred) Blaisuis (also spelled Blaisius) born abt 1888 in NY. Sometime between 1900 and 1905 Fred's (and his brother Louis) last name change from Abig to Blaisius. On the 1905 NY State census, when the new last name first appears, he is living with his mother Teckla Abig and his brother Louis. It does not appear that his father was deceased or that his mother remarried. Can anyone offers and suggestions as to why this might have happened or where to look to figure out why his name changed? It is a family mystery no one can seem to answer.

Title: Adams, Yeomans, Fosgate, Herkimer Families
Description: I would like to correspond with anyone having information on the family history for Nathaniel and Clarissa (Yeomans) Adams, who resided in German Flatts from ~1810 to ~1850. Their marriage announcement in the 1803 Connecticut Centinel suggests Nathaniel was from Colchester and Clarissa from Lebanon, CT. Nathaniel Adams is listed in the 1810 to 1840 Herkimer County census records, but no other family records have been discovered. I understand that fires in Herkimer County vital records offices may have destroyed key family documents including birth records. Family members purchased part or all of the former Burnetsfield Patent lot #5 from the Herkimer family, but I do not have a copy of this grant deed. However family members sold parts and parcels of the former Lot 5 along the Erie Canal as shown in other Herkimer County grant deeds. Names cited in the grant deeds include, John Jost Petrie, Conrad Rickert, Preston Yeomans, Erastus Yeomans, Daniel Yeomans (Rev. War), Abiel and Lucy (Yeomans) Stark, and John and Sophronia (Adams) Fosgate. Nathaniel and Clarissa are buried alongside the Fosgates in Gouverneur, NY. Any insights into the Adams family of German Flatts and their association with the Herkimer family are appreciated.

Was John junior adopted by COMEYS? Also sent were 2 photos of John COMYS/COMEYS snr & Olga with John jnr (PETERS/COMYS) & Cornelia. These are probably dated about 1946 to 1950 with John jnr being about 20 and Cornelia about 10 years old. Despite a lot of Google and Ancestry searching all I can find of them after about 1939 in records is Olga’s 1997 death (& SSN) in Staten Island. So that I can bed down my research and records for Jacobus’ life in USA can someone with familiarity is searching US records contact me and point me in the right direction? I can pad out the vital information aspects for the various people I’ve mentioned above to assist enquiries made by someone over there!
