The NYG&B provides many articles and original guides for members to assist them in their research, including the most popular "Research Aid" articles that have been updated by experts in the field. Below is a list of resources available to members who log in, followed by some useful guides which are available to both non-members and members.

Guides to Doing Research in New York Counties

With the help of a team of experienced volunteers, the NYG&B has begun to assemble individual guides to doing research in each of the 62 counties in the State of New York.  Below is a list of County Guides that have been assembled thus far.  Each Guide provides a compilation of resources available, with an emphasis on online resources, which might be useful to someone doing research in a particular county.  Please note that the inclusion of a link does not constitute an endorsement of its content or accuracy.  Although we have sought to include known, reliable sources, we have leaned toward the side of inclusivity; while all links might not be of equal value, an individual researcher is the best judge of what information might be of help to him or her.

It is our goal to refine and enhance the County Guides with feedback from our members.  If you are knowledgeable about the genealogical resources of a particular county and would like to suggest additions or corrections to one of our County Guide please send an email to:  If you would like to join our County Guide volunteer team, please send an email to

Research Aid Articles

For many years, the NYG&B gathered the most useful articles published in the New York Researcher along with other original material and presented them on its website under the title “Research Aids.”  Many of the most popular “Research Aids” have been updated by the original authors and are listed below.  For other Research Aids, members can access an archive of Research Aids. Members may read the articles; non-members may view the titles of the articles. Please note that the complete run of the New York Researcher may now be found in our eLibrary.
