Arrival of Joseph Samuel Holstein to USA and marriage to Etta Schatz, 1887-1891

Genealogical Inquiries

I am seeking date and location details for the arrival of Joseph Samuel Holstein in the US and his marriage to Etta/Yetta Schatz. I have estimated the timeframe period for both events between January 1887 – June 1891. Here is a summary of my research:

1) Joseph arrived in the US about 1887-88, based on daughter Pauline Holstein’s 1920 and 1924 passport applications and Joseph’s October 1892 Naturalization Certificate issued in Onondaga County, which requires 5 years continued residency in the US before issuance. The passport applications indicate Joseph arrived from Warsaw, Poland, where he was born, via Liverpool, England [probably landing at Hull and leaving from Liverpool) “on or about 1887” and “1888” – two different years used in the two applications. I have not found his passenger list yet.

2) Joseph Holstein, woodcarver, first appears in the 1889 Syracuse City Directory. He died in Syracuse on 19 August 1896 at age 34.

3) Joseph & Etta are listed together in the Syracuse 4th Ward in the NYS Census, 16 February 1892, and Pauline was born subsequently in Syracuse 3 April 1892, so marriage would have been, say, at least 9 months before Pauline was born, i.e., before July 1891.

4) I did not find a listing of the marriage in the NYS Marriage Index for 1887 – 1891 (Internet Archive), except SAMUEL HOLSTEIN (26 OCT 1891, Syracuse, Record #19033). I first thought maybe this could be Joseph Samuel Holstein, but Schatz/Shatz did not appear in the 1891 index, and the 1891-92 Syracuse Directory DID list, for the first time, a Samuel Holstein, shipper, 122 E. Genesee St., boards at 319 Cedar St., not the same as woodcarver Joseph Samuel Holstein, so I believe the Index is referencing” shipper” Holstein.

5) No listing found in the NY City Marriage Index for 1829-1940 in FamilySearch.

6) Etta Schatz’s family DID live in NYC-Manhattan at least between 1882-1898 (NYC directories), which would include my estimated marriage years. If Etta was married in the city where her family lived, then the marriage should appear in the NYC Index in the 1888-1891 period. But it did not.

7) Etta supposedly was born in CT in July 1869 (1900 US Census). If the family decided to have the wedding in CT, particularly Hartford (where her brother Barnett was born in 1872), perhaps with other Schatz relatives living there at the time, then she should appear in the CT Marriage Index 1620-1926 (Ancestry.com). I found no record there of their marriage in the CT Index.

Thank you for any assistance.
