David Pell of Brooklyn, NY 1795(?)-1854

My 3rd great grandfather was David Pell of Brooklyn, NY; I know he was born between 1790 and 1800 and his body was interred at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn in 1854 although I'm pretty sure that's not when he died. He was a ferry boat captain there in Brooklyn for about twenty years if not more. His wife was named Sarah but I have no clue what her maiden name was. Is anyone familiar with the records in Brooklyn, NY?? Is their system good? Are there many records there that are not available online? I'm interested in going to Brooklyn to see for myself but would greatly appreciate anyone's knowledge to know what to expect. Thank you in advance!
