Jonathan HORTON
I am looking to try to find the NY family connection of my ancestor, Jonathan HORTON, b. possibly 1754, Westchester County (although so far, I can find no such record), d. 19 Sep 1840, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Canada. He evacuated from NY at the end of the Revolutionary War, to Nova Scotia, supposedly widowed, accompanied by his young son, Israel Horton. (First wife was reported to be a Sarah Goldsmith from Blooming Grove, Orange County, NY, supposedly married 1778. Also had a child, Gabriel HORTON, b. 1781, d. 1781).
Jonathan is listed in 2 separate Nova Scotia Loyalist land grants, one of which included Philip Van Cortlandt, who was a prominent NY Loyalist. Jonathan's headstone (along with that of his 2nd wife Mary Bradey, married in Shelburne, NS, 1786) was removed from a private unmaintained cemetery on his original Nova Scotia homestead, sometime prior to 1978, by "an American Horton relative", supposedly to be placed in a White Plains, NY, cemetery. A local Nova Scotia genealogy places him as Barnabas1 > Caleb2 > Jonathan3> Jonathan4 > Jonathan5 of NS , but so far this is conjecture only. Any Barnabas HORTON genealogy enthusiasts out there? I'd love some help!!
I have a little more information, if someone is interested...
Thanks!!
A Nova Scotian HORTON
