Rev Dr Henry John George Wendt 1825 aka Rev Dr Sobinski (or similar sounding name)
Looking for any information for Rev Dr Henry John George Wendt (German Evangelical Lutheran). B: 1825, Prussia (Vilnius, Lithuania?) Entered the ministry in 1851. Sent as a missionary to Texas from Boston. In 1858, he and his family came to Pennsylvania and took charge of the Swamp or New Hanover parish: New Hanover, Keeler’s, Boyertown, Hill church and Sassamansville. He remained in Montgomery county until the close of 1864 or the beginning of 1865. He then became superintendent of the Orphans’ Home at Germantown in Pennsylvania. In 1867, when his misconduct as superintendent of the Home was uncovered, the president of the Home proclaimed Wendt's suspension in the church papers. He was arrested and tried at Philadelphia, found guilty and was sentenced to 15 years at the Eastern Penitentiary. While incarcerated, he authored a book "A History of the World" (which he attempted to publish) and studied medicine. He was released in 1878. In 1880, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that he had opened an office in New York city and was practicing medicine under the name of "Sobinski".
