Steuben County Land Records

My g-g grandfather shows up in Steuben County beginning in 1860's. He appears on a land ownership map and on the state censuses that show he owned the land. I have scoured the grantee/grantor indexes on Family Search and a friend went to the courthouse and there are no entries of him were found. Any ideas? Family story says that after he died in 1885 his wife/daughter sold the farm.
