Welcome to The New York Genealogical & Biographical Society
For nearly 400 years, New York has been known for the diversity of its people. Your ancestors may have been among the first Europeans or Africans who came to New Netherland, or the Native Americans who were already living here, or were part of the long stream of immigrants from all over the world who came in the subsequent years. The G&B is here to help you learn more about those ancestors and the world in which they lived.
The G&B is a membership organization, and new members are always welcome. Benefits of membership include subscriptions to our two quarterly publications, the Record and the Researcher, and discounts on other publications; unlimited queries on the NYG&B Bulletin Board, four free queries per year, published in the Researcher and on our website; access to our Members' Area E-library, and reduced fees for educational programs.
Free: E-Newsletter: Would you like to receive monthly updates on what programs are coming up and what’s going on in the NYG&B? Please send your e-mail address to webmaster@nygbs.org and ask to be added to our list of e-zine recipients. |

LATEST NEWS FROM THE NYG&B SOCIETY Posted: Tuesday, July 22 @ Eastern Daylight Time |
|
The big question on the minds of NYG&B members for the past several months has been, "Where is the collection going and how soon will it be accessible again?" We are now able to share the good news with you. We are very pleased to announce it will be going to the New York Public Library to be incorporated with the wonderful genealogical and manuscripts collections already housed there.
Although the transfer of the collection will take some time—it will take up to two years for the G&B collection to be fully accessible at NYPL—the end result will benefit all genealogists. Our entire collection will be accessible on-line through NYPL's database. Offering our catalog on-line had been a long-time goal of the G&B, but the resources necessary to carry out this project always seemed beyond reach. Now through our partnership with NYPL, this dream will finally be achieved. Having our catalog available, just a couple clicks away, through the web will be a boon to our out-of-area members who may not have been able to get to our library often, or at all, to discover what resources we had for them.

Yorkers, Yankees, and Beyond: Tracking New York Ancestors Posted: Monday, June 30 @ Eastern Daylight Time |
|
A Conference for Genealogists and Historians
Thursday - Saturday, October 30-November 1, 2008
at the Gideon Putnam Spa Resort
The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society is very pleased to present our third Saratoga program, "Yorkers, Yankees, and Beyond: Tracking New York Ancestors Into, Across, and Around the State."
Once again we plan to join the forces of genealogists and historians to provide a rounded overview of the people, politics, economics, and cultural forces that helped shape New York. We will focus on sources at the local, state, and federal levels. The NYG&B enthusiastically supports the trend of genealogists seeking to "put flesh on the bones" of their ancestors by learning the social history of their forbears, and of historians learning more about genealogical records and techniques and how to apply them to their work.

NYG&B Library Closing Posted: Tuesday, May 13 @ Eastern Daylight Time |
|
The G&B Library will be closing at our long-time location as of June 1st. We urge researchers who've been contemplating a visit to make use of the Library and complete their inquiries before then.
After closure our librarians will be fully engaged in preparing the Library to move and be recatalogued. The timing of this project, and where G&B materials will be available again, have yet to be finalized. We will announce these decisions as soon as they are made final.
