This is a free, online event held via Zoom
Join the NYG&B and special guests Paul Campbell and Chad Krouse as we head back to school this fall. Paul, President of the College of Arms Foundation, will give a lecture on the heraldry of the eight Ivy League universities and colleges, providing a brief history of each while expounding on their relative heraldic merits. He will be joined by Dr. Chad Krouse, a member of the College of Arms Foundation, who runs the Scholastic Heraldry Facebook site. The talk will begin with a short explanation of the visual and artistic elements that make for good heraldry, giving us the tools to evaluate and compare the heraldry of the eight schools.
About the Presenters
Paul Campbell has been pursuing heraldic interests since 2005, when he attended a visit by Lord Lyon Robin Blair in New York. This new hobby reignited his love of writing and he began writing on heraldry as well as Campbell history. He is a lifetime member of the Clan Campbell Society North America and served as the editor of its quarterly journal for more than three years. In 2013, he edited a book on heraldic bookplates of members of Clan Campbell. Paul has lectured at events that were co-sponsored by the NYG&B and the College of Arms Foundation, including two very popular discussions of the heraldry appearing on wine labels. In 2010, he was selected to be on the board of the American College of Heraldry, followed by election to the board of the College of Arms Foundation in 2012. Since 2017, he has served as the Vice President of the College of Arms Foundation, and he was recently elected President of the Foundation.
Chad Krouse first encountered heraldry while attending Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, where he earned his bachelor's degree. His interest in scholastic heraldry dramatically grew during his time at Sewanee, The University of the South, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree. Professionally, Chad works in higher education and currently serves as Assistant Vice President for University Development at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond. He earned his doctoral degree from VCU in 2018 and has been an adjunct professor at the School of Education, College of William & Mary, as well as at VCU. Chad's heraldic research focus is on Pierre de Chaignon la Rose (1872–1941), who helped revive heraldry in the United States during the early 20th century. He plans to publish a book in the near future while also sharing his findings on his personal blog, Walsingham Wanderings. Chad is a member of The Heraldry Society (United Kingdom) and the American Heraldry Society as well as a new annual member of the College of Arms Foundation.
