Brower family New York City

I have been looking for records concerning a William Brower born around 1760 place is believed to be NYC. He married Margaret Hoban around 1796. Since he was in his 30's at this point I believe he could have been married previously.
He is listed in the NYC directories at being a "broker". Now, I am not sure what that means for him but I do know that he worked to secure deals between two parties. I know that in the only census he is listed in, that several other children are listed besides my ancestor Catherine (b. 1797). I have no knowledge of the other's names. I have been researching a very long time for this family and used traditional methods for his time frame without success. If you have any help or tips that I might use, suggestions are welcome.
