CAVERLY - surname
I have researched the CAVERLY surname for years including variants. There is a great deal of history regarding this surname in the USA. Some historic information regarding the CAVERLY surname is questionable. Utilizing genealogyDNA some conclusions I came up with.
Not all those with the CAVERLY/CAVERLEY surname are related. It appears there are 3 separate CAVERLY trees not genetically related to each other, based on DNA results. In my research I now refer to these trees as:
New Hampshire Caverlys – Appeared to arrive in New Hampshire about 1680. It is worth noting a publication by Robert Boodey Caverly in 1870 indicated all the Caverlys were related. This publication is in the National archives and although a useful resource does contain errors and omissions. It is indicated they originated in England.
New York Caverlys – May have arrived in Long Island NY about 1650 or earlier. Some early references use a variant name CAVALIER. In the 1790 US census the spelling used was CAVERLY and some Long Island records before 1790 also use the spelling CAVERLY. Some CAVERLY families moved up the Hudson River and settled in the Ulster County area. Some descendants can still be found in the geographic area today although those related to this tree spread out across the USA and Canada. At this date there is no positive record of the origin of this branch.
Irish Caverlys - Appeared to arrive about 1840 in New York. It appears they originated in Ireland where the surname can still be found today.
CALVERLEY – There are references to the possible connection between the CALVERLEY surname and CAVERLY surname. English surname dictionaries also indicate the surname CAVERLY derived from the name CALVERLEY. History also shows references to some crests (Arms) under the name CALVERLEY. Reference to Arms on the name CAVERLY would appear to incorrect. The surname CALVERLEY is an ancient name traced back as far as the year 1000AD or the time when surnames appear to have be created in England. CALVERLEY history indicates the forefather came from Scotland. Today there is a village in the City of Leeds called “Calverley”. In the 1086 Domesday Book, Calverley is listed as "Caverleia”.
GenealogyDNA – Comparisons to date show no genetic link between New Hampshire Caverlys, New York Caverlys, Irish Caverlys and the Calverley surname. More testing of those with the CAVERLY surname may expand this data. DNA results indicate there is a closer connection between the New Hampshire Caverlys and the Irish Caverlys but not enough matching to conclude they are from the same family tree. There is not genetic connection to the surname CALVERLEY and any of the three branches of the CAVERLY surname.
North America – Caverly descendants of all 3 trees have spread across the USA.
Branches of the New York Caverlys spread into Quebec and Ontario and westward across all of Canada. Some of these families migrated to Canada but the migrated back into the USA. Michigan appears to have many descendants from this tree. Close to 90 percent of Caverlys in Canada are descendants from the New York branch.
Many from the New Hampshire Caverly branch tended to spread south in the USA but they are also scattered across the county.
Irish Caverlys are not a plentiful and are spread out with several of them appearing west as far as California.
