  Longest continuously chartered city in the U.S.
  1614    Trading post (Fort Nassau) established on Castle/Westerlo Island.
  1624    Dutch West India Company establishes Fort Orange (North of Westerlo Island)
  1629    Killaen van Rensselaer acquires patroonship of Rensselaerswijck, surrounding Fort Orange
  1652    Settlement surrounding Fort removed from Rensselaerswijck and named Beverwyck
  1664    English rule, Beverwyck renamed New Albany
  1673    Dutch return, New Albany renamed Willemstad(t)
  1674    English rule resumed, name New Albany restored but “New” gradually discarded
