Brewster Collection: Volume and Chapter Breakdown | New York Genealogical & Biographical Society

The Brewster Collection comprises 14 bound volumes and more than 7000 pages of handwritten and typed family records for more than a dozen generations of direct descendants of Elder William Brewster. To better navigate the 14 volumes, we have broken each volume down to chapters with common records. Sometimes, the chapter reflects a particular surname. Other chapters might show several generations of a branch, while some might group several surname groups together who are in the same generation.

Typically, a chapter will contain anywhere from five scanned documents to as many as 30 scanned documents.

Miss Emma C. Brewster Jones, who authored the Brewster Genealogy charting the male lines of the family, collected information about the female lines of direct descent from Elder William Brewster. Using Individual Family Records forms sent to her cousins, Jones was able to get records showing an individual in relation to the first Brewster, indicating clearly how many generations they were descended from him, and all the direct-line descendants in between them. Also indicated on the form in a clear fashion are that individual's parents, and their children. Often, other information has been added to the forms, as taped-over information, additional handwritten or typed letters or descendant reports, and newspaper clippings.

Because Jones was contacting as many cousins as possible, there are sometimes multiple Individual Family Record forms for the same individual. This means there's a possibility of discrepant or incomplete information on one or more forms. Red pencil marks seem to be some sort of cross-checking by Miss Jones herself.

Also, many of the forms indicated who submitted the information, and references used by the submitter, or double-checked by Miss Jones.
