Compiled accounts of many Westchester County families are contained in “The Families of the Colonial Town of Philipsburgh, Westchester County, N.Y.,” a four-volume typescript by Grenville C. Mackenzie [NYG&B Library MS. T 1.1]. The author identifies the Town of Philipsburgh as the northern portion of the Manor of Philipsburgh, comprising the present-day towns of Greenburgh, Mount Pleasant and Ossining.
Mackenzie's accounts of almost all families of New York origin begin with the immigrant to New York, who may not have been the first to settle in Philipsburgh. As a result, this work is useful for downstate New York research in general. His statements should be treated with caution, however, as his only documentation is a long bibliography of primary and secondary sources consulted. Mackenzie was a prolific writer, and different versions by him of some of these accounts can be found in other libraries, including elsewhere in the NYG&B Manuscript Collection.
An alphabetical list of the families covered is given below. Note that the pages covering the end of Guion through Honeywell are bound in the middle of the account of the Hunt family.
