Using The Dutch Settlers Society of Albany Yearbook

Since 1924 valuable material relating to the history and genealogy of the Albany area has been appearing in The Dutch Settlers Society of Albany Yearbook [NYG&B call number N.Y. L AL13.92]. There are cumulative listings of articles in vol. 28-29, pp. 53-64, and in vol. 49, pp. 37-40. However, there are every-name indexes for only a few articles, as indicated below, not for each volume. As a result, the careful reader will want to scrutinize the useful parts of each volume to make sure nothing is overlooked. For example, in vol. 6 at pp. 19-20 is the will of Johan Frese, dated 21 April 1685, mentioning daughters Abeltie and Annette, the wives of Anthony Lespinaer and Omie de Lagransie, respectively. Yet since there is no every-name index to each volume, no one may have noticed that this will identifies the wife of the immigrant Anthony Lispenard.[Note also the LaGrange genealogy at 24:7-8 for mention of this will.]

Listed below are the source records and the compiled genealogies in the Yearbook. The compiled genealogies are rarely authoritative — but always useful. An asterisk indicates the article is accompanied by an every-name index. There are also general well-documented articles about Albany and Schenectady history in vols. 48 and 51.
