The 1810 federal census in Oneida County, New York features absences in the data that make it difficult to use for genealogical research purposes. The existing documents do not identify the towns of residence for the households, and they only record the initial letter of the first name for heads of households. This study, conducted by Michael Lints, sought to identify the towns of residence by cross referencing the record with the 1800 federal census and 1814 landowners’ census in Oneida County. The collection provides the first name initial and the last name of each head of household, along with their likely town of residence, page location and number. The search results also show matched name entries from both the 1800 and 1814 censuses. You can read more about the study in Mr. Lint's summary, "Identifying Locations in the 1810 Census for Oneida County"; this document is also a fully searchable facet of this collection.
Assuming the 1810 census taker went door-to-door in each neighborhood and recorded households in the order of visitation, the entries are grouped by their likely geographical location, although little attention was paid to town boundaries. To clarify these potential geographic groupings, the author identified possible matching entries for the head of household by cross-referencing individual entries from the 1810 Oneida census to the 1800 federal census and the 1814 landowners’s census. When a match was discovered, the full name as found in the cross reference was entered into the data results. If more than one matching name was found, all of them were listed and the number of occurrences for each name was noted in parenthesis.
The searchable records hosted here represents 5,398 entries for the 1810 census.
