These volumes represent mid-19th century handwritten journals of Dr. Amaziah Church Sherwood’s and Orlando Beebe Sherwood's patients and their accounts. The former graduated from Geneva Medical School in 1841, and worked as a physician in Cayutaville, Newfield, and Enfield, New York, until his death in 1860. Orlando Sherwood, Amaziah's son, served in the Civil War as a medic and served the Cayutaville community after graduating from medical school.
Watch a free Collection Close-Ups webinar recording for this collection, in which the NYG&B team explains what you can find and how you can search it.
The first book includes handwritten records of 150 patient names and fees/expenditures of Dr. Amaziah Church Sherwood's, the second book is Orlando Sherwood's account ledger, and the third book is the latter's medical journal. It is unclear if the medical journal represents the same patients that are found in book 2, but offers fascinating insight into 19th century medical practices.
