This collection consists of a searchable database of abolitionists in St. Lawrence county from the 1830s to the 1850s. The core data is a log of all individuals who signed a petition or took another deliberate public action demonstrating their support for abolishing slavery in the United States. Users can search by the first and last names of abolitionists or keyword(s), which will search through all additional details collected. The latter can be used to narrow name searches or searched independently. Keywords account for nature of the petition, petitioning town, church and/or anti-slavery society affiliation, individual’s office held in organizations (if any), year of petition, and the individual’s town of residence.
