Volunteering with Digitize New York
New York City Digitization Center
Volunteers in the New York City area are invited to help us in our mission to preserve historic records from across New York State. Digitization volunteers are trained to:
- Scan documents
- Perform image quality control
- Follow best practices for file management and inventory
Our New York City Digitization Center has a state-of-the-art CopiBook OS A2 Scanner that we typically operate Monday through Friday in two-hour shifts, starting at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Attend volunteer orientation! Every month, our Manager of Digital Collections trains prospectives volunteers to scan, index, and edit historical records. See the current schedule and registration details.
Volunteers who demonstrate ease and comfort with the technology and a desire to return will be invited to sign up for future volunteer spots.
Central New York Digitization Center
Volunteers in the Syracuse area are invited to help us in our mission to preserve historic records from across New York State. The CNY Digitization Center is located within the offices of the William G. Pomeroy Foundation on E. Brighton Avenue in Syracuse, NY. Digitization volunteers are trained to:
- Scan documents
- Handle fragile records
- Transport materials to and from partners and offsite storage
- Follow best practices for file management and inventory
Our Central New York Digitization Center has a state-of-the-art CopiBook OS A2 Scanner that we typically operate Tuesday through Thursday in three hour shifts, starting at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Volunteers are asked to commit to a shift once a week for at least three months.

Remote Volunteer Opportunities
Remote volunteers assist with tasks such as:
- Indexing – Receiving scans of materials and populating corresponding index spreadsheets
- Transcription Quality Assurance – Volunteers familiar with assessing the quality of machine read transcription can assist with the training and re-testing of programs used to read and organize documents
- Record assessment and retrieval – Depending on location, volunteers occassionally assist the NYG&B with on-site assessment of records and historical documents around New York state, with travel feeds typically reimbursed
